Start by thinking about what you actually need. A compact car is perfect for city driving and easy parking. An SUV gives you space for family trips or outdoor gear. A van works for moving furniture or group travel. Do not pay for more vehicle than you need, but do not squeeze into something too small either.
Most rental companies offer additional insurance coverage. Before you buy it, check whether your personal auto insurance or credit card already covers rental vehicles — many do. If you are not covered, the rental company's collision damage waiver is usually worth the peace of mind.
Most rentals operate on a "full-to-full" policy: you pick up the car with a full tank and return it with a full tank. If you return it with less fuel, the company will charge you to refill it — usually at a premium rate. Always top off before you return.
Some rental agreements include unlimited mileage, while others cap your daily or total distance. Going over the limit means per-mile charges that add up quickly. Also watch for fees on additional drivers, late returns, and one-way trips.
When you return the vehicle, park it in the designated area, remove all your belongings, and check that you have not left any damage. The attendant will do a quick inspection, and you will be on your way.
