Picking up a rental car should be exciting, not stressful. But skipping a quick inspection before you drive off can lead to disputes over pre-existing damage, unexpected charges, and even safety issues on the road. Here are five things you should always check.
Before you even start the engine, do a full walk-around of the vehicle. Look for scratches, dents, cracked mirrors, or chipped paint. Take photos or a quick video with your phone — this is your proof if the rental company tries to charge you for damage you didn't cause.
Inspect all four tires and the spare. Look for adequate tread depth, proper inflation, and any visible damage like bulges or cuts. Driving on bad tires is dangerous and could leave you stranded.
Turn on the headlights, brake lights, and indicators. A burnt-out light might get you pulled over, and you don't want to discover it after dark on an unfamiliar road.
Check the fuel gauge and confirm the tank level matches what is noted on your rental agreement. Also glance at the dashboard for any warning lights — engine, oil, or battery warnings are red flags you should report immediately.
